What to Wear | Prepping for your Holiday Mini Session

FILED IN:

Portraits, Prepping For Your Session

Hello Fabulous!!

With Holiday Mini Sessions just weeks away (I CAN’T WAIT!!) I wanted to launch a new blog series on prepping for your session!! In the next two weeks follow along as I share some great tips geared toward getting your family picture day ready! We’ll cover everything from what to wear, to how to not have a mental breakdown, how to prepare your husband, and preparing your children!

First up is the dreaded WHAT DO WE WEAR??? Here are a few tips that I recommend for Fall AND Winter sessions.  I chose both seasons for a two reasons….1. Our sessions happen during the fall and our setting is (hopefully) going to provide us some beautiful fall foliage. And 2. Even though we shoot them in the fall they are Holiday Mini Sessions – meaning I plan these sessions with the holidays in mind and all that comes with it (Christmas cards, gifts, ornaments, etc…).  If you’ve worked with me before you know that during your Holiday Mini Session we’ll take some shots with the holiday props/background and some without.  That way if you choose to display your images in your home (which I hope you will!) you don’t have Christmas photos up year round.  And 3. I want you to be a able to reflect your style! If you want to go with more of a fall color scheme – great!! If you want to deck out in all things red and green…be my guest! Either way your family will look FABULOUS!

First up is FALL:

Fall is all about bundling up in lots of layers, enjoying the shift from hot to cool, and soaking up the sun and autumn foliage. Here are a few tips for choosing fall inspired outfits:

  • Choose colors that won’t clash too much with the fall leaves. Instead, stick with a neutral palette with colors that blend seamlessly into autumn’s spectrum: earthy reds, burnt oranges, creamy nude, etc.
  • Layer up! Don’t hesitate to throw on those scarves, cardigans, blazers or hats.
  • Wear shoes that fit the season. Think riding boots or comfy, fur-lined boots. Loafers and flats can also work perfectly.

Here are some tips if you are going for more of a Winter look:

  • Don’t be afraid to punch things up with splashy colors. Think bright red, navy, yellow, green. Any color that really pops is a go.
  • On that same note, don’t hesitate to play with prints. We love seeing gingham, polka dots, stripes, etc.
  • Really bundle up and play up the winter factor. We love seeing fur-lined boots or hats, oversized chunky scarves, adorable gloves, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to go traditional with Christmas colors!  Traditional doesn’t mean boring at all!! If anything it’s adorable!fall colors family outfit christmas outfit cute girls fall outfits
