Tips to Prepare for Your Wedding Photography Consultation

Meeting with potential wedding photographers ahead of time is crucial for booking the right photography vendor for your wedding. You’ll put a lot of time and consideration into all the details of your wedding and you want to choose the right photographer who will capture everything the way you envision it. You and your photographer will spend a lot of time together on your big day so you want to make sure that they not only have the style you are looking for but also the personality that will mesh with yours. Here are some tips to help you as you are preparing for your wedding photography consultation.

Take notes

Have a pen and paper handy so you can look back over all the information you discuss. If you are meeting with more than one photographer this is incredibly important to be able to compare your likes and dislikes.

Expect to make a deposit

If you absolutely love the photographer you need to be ready to make a deposit to reserve them. Some photographers will even offer an incentive for booking with them at your consultation so keep this in mind when going into your meeting.

Go to the photographer

It is ideal to meet the photographer in their studio since this will give you an opportunity to look over previous prints, albums, and canvases they have done, but not all photographers have studios or they may be too far out of your way. Meet your photographer where they suggest since most often it will be a quiet place where you can actually talk and have fewer distractions.

Bring photos

Your wedding dress, your vision, your style preferences; if you have pictures bring them. This not only helps you decide if they are the right fit but will give the photographer a look at your personality and personal style.

Ask to see a full gallery

The best way to get an idea of how the photographer will shoot your wedding is if they show you a full wedding they have done before. You’ll want to know if their style of shooting will match up to what you want and it will give you an idea of how and what they shoot.

One final tip; don’t be afraid to ask questions. You want to make sure you are choosing the best photographer for your wedding day and asking questions about how they work, solve problems or handle cancellations, will give you better peace of mind that you are booking the right one for you. I hope these were helpful tips as you are preparing for your wedding photography consultation!

To give you some added peace of mind and to make sure that everything runs as smoothly as possible when it comes to your wedding photos, here are the most important questions to ask your photographer before your big day.

  1. Will you be bringing an assistant or second photographer with you? There are so many special moments that happen during your wedding day that a second photographer is always a great idea if one is available. If your photographer will be bringing someone along, find out how long they have been working together and ask to see a few of the second photographer’s shots to make sure that you are happy with their style and abilities as well.
  2. What happens if you can’t make it to the wedding?  This is not something that a lot of brides remember to ask their photographer. If your photographer gets ill or there’s a family emergency, what plan do they have in place to ensure that you still get photos on your wedding day? If they have a backup photographer lined up, you should find out as much as possible about them to make sure that their style is still in line with what you’re looking for. It’s also best to find out about any extra fees that you might need to pay if you end up using the backup photographer.
  3. Do you have any backup equipment?  This is extremely important because as much as you would like to rely on technology, things can go wrong. Make sure that your photographer not only has a backup camera but multiple lenses and flashes too.

Never be reluctant to ask your photographer any questions that you think are important. This is a day you have put a lot of time and effort into so it’s only natural to want to feel at-ease as your wedding day gets closer.
